James Edwards

1939-10-01 2012-12-11

James G. Edwards (also known as “Little Head” or “Little James”) was born on October 1, 1939 in Bethlehem, Georgia to the late, Arby Edwards and Lula May (Shepherd) Edwards of Georgia. He was raised by his grandmother, Ludella Victoria (Cox) Edwards.

James joined church at an early age and was a member of Antioch North West Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He was educated in the Atlanta Public School System and graduated from Samuel Howard Archer High School.

During James youth, he enjoyed hanging out with his Uncle Leonard Edwards (known as Yellow Hammer) at his car garage. Later on, James was employed at Lays Potato Chip Company, Atlanta, Georgia. He then served in the Arm Forces from 1962 until 1964. Then after, he worked for Public Works Division of San Francisco in California.

He was formerly married in 1961 to Elizabeth Yvonne (Meadows) Edwards of Atlanta, Georgia. From that union his two daughters, Emily Rebecca (Edwards) Hopkins and Elizabeth Victoria (Libby) (Edwards) Warner were born.

In later years, James loved being around his family. He was known to have a quiet and tenacity nature. Through it all his family loved him. He loved “Soul” music, especially, B.B. King “The Thrill is Gone”, and the Dramatics “In the Rain”. Never Disturb James while he was watching sports. He only spoke three minutes on the phone. James became an avid new watcher, he taught his daughters to be aware of the world around them. Eating greens on Sunday was also his favorite past-time. James mostly enjoyed the warmed of seeing his grandchildren smiles, laughter, and silly ways like him.

His favorite quotes were, “I was born in Bethlehem, Georgia, ain’t no Jesus Christ but I worked for the government”, “When I die let the government take care of me”, “If they don’t pay the mortgage they don’t count!”, and “I’m a Edwards, E-D-W-A-R-D-S, Edwards!”

On December 11, 2012, James quietly passed away at the VA Hospital in San Francisco, California.

His memories live on in his two daughters and five granddaughters; Adrianna Edwards, Ashley Hopkins, Alexandria (Emoni) Hopkins, A’Kayla Warner, and Allyssha (Lele) Hopkins, all of Stockton, California. Three siblings: Maxine (Edwards) Hendrix of Atlanta, Georgia, Willie Wynn of Antioch, Tennessee, and Joe Wynn of Monroe, Georgia. Beloved Aunt, Queen (Edwards) Gipson. Four special cousins: James “Big James” Edwards, Linda (Gipson) Harmon, Benetta Gipson, and Gerta (Gipson) Lewis and with a host of other relatives and friends.

James’s beloved Grandmother Ludella Victoria (Cox) Edwards, Brother Winston Edwards, and Uncle D.R. Edwards precede him in death.
