Lula Espy

1923-07-04 2004-12-26
Almighty God,in his infinite wisdom, love and mercy, called Lula Mae Cox Espy to her eternal home on Sunday, December 26, 2004 at her home in Cary N.C. Lula, the daughter of the late James and Ella Johnson Cox was born July 4, 1923.

She spent her childhood in Statham, Ga. and attended Public Schools there. She was a member of Fairfield Baptist Church in Statham. At the age of eighteen she moved to Montclair, New Jersey. Lula worked hard and sent money back to Georgia to help out with her younger sisters and brother.

In 1945, Lula married Rozie Lee Espy, whom she had known from home in Georgia. He preceded her in death in 1978. From this union, five children were born, whom she loved dearly. She retired from Montclair State College in 1988. She moved to North Caroline in 1993.

She loved her apartment and her independence. We often called her “the Mayor,” Lula loved tending to her plants, watching her cooking shows on television and reading her bible daily. She enjoyed working in the garden at her son’s home and the many outlines with her children and grandchildren. She was a shining example of how to live your life and often said that, if you live your life right you’ll never have to worry. She was always there when we needed her. She leaves to mourn her passing, her children, Charles Espy & wife Evelyn, Patricia Brooks & husband Bill, Kenneth Espy & wife Darlene, Michael Espy & wife Reynette and Michelle Espy. Thirteen grandchildren, Richard, Marc, and Derek Brooks, Charles Jr., and Danielle Espy, Renee, Antonia, LaToya, Elijah, and Haley Espy, Lanette, Michael Jr. and Ashley Espy. Three great grandchildren, Jasmine, Briana and Alexis Brooks. Four sisters, Grace Stephens, Alice Kee, Emma Harris and Eva Dance. One brother, James (Chunk) Cox. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
